My first appointment with the hearing therapist

This week I had an appointment with a hearing therapist at Melksham Hospital. The appointment lasted around an hour and covered my history, causes of tinnitus and possible treatments.

Tinnitus is a symptom and I have not been able to define a cause for its onset and I don't have any significant hearing loss so a mystery.

The therapist drew this simple diagram of the ear, the brain and its connections to the auditory cortex. She gave an explanation of how sound is converted into nerve impulses by the cochlea that extend my understanding learnt in general science in the 1960's. She said that tinnitus may be the result of damage to some of the fine hairs in the cochlea and the brain over compensating for the loss of the frequency. Fascinating.

Of course the most interesting part of the appointment was when she talked about treatments. She told me about 3 categories Distraction, Relaxation and stress management.

Distraction. I have a smart phone so she suggested that I down load one or more of the apps there are for Tinnitus including the one by Oticon the hearing aid manufacturer.

Relaxation. She told me that there is clinical evidence that Tai Chi and Yoga can benefit tinnitus sufferers.

Stress management. She introduced me to the square breathing technique and a couple of apps, Headspace and My Mindfulness.

She went on to talk about white noise therapy. This seems to me to be the best place to start so I down loaded an app on to my phone and have been listening to the hiss of white noise for the past couple of days.

May be its wishful thinking but the level of tinnitus seems to be lower. As a first step in finding a way of easing the condition I am happy to see where white noise leads.

Blood Test Results

The pre-treatment blood test is important to ensure that patients are capable of with standing the toxic effects of the chemotherapy drugs. My neutrophil and Alt levels have cause deferment over the past few months. This weeks blood test results are ok so Monday's infusion will go ahead. That's Monday morning at 9:30 am definitely early!

Tinnitus, starting the journey

A few months ago I thought I could hear a noise from a radiator when trying to go to sleep one evening. The noise was so real that I felt that it must have been an actual sound. As the central heating was not on I came to the conclusion that the sound was in my head. That incident was an early sign on my journey to being a tinnitus sufferer. A visit to my GP prompted a response of 'Oh dear' when I told him that I thought that I was suffering from tinnitus. After inspecting my ears he told me that there were three approaches that he could offer me: Do nothing and learn to live with it, see an audiologist to check if I needed a hearing aid or undergo hearing therapy. I chose the audiology appointment as my preferred first step.

Oncologist consultation

I have a quarterly appointment with my oncology consultant, Dr David Webb or one of his team every three month. Last week my appointment was with one of his team and two Mcmillan nurses, Sue and Jo. The oncologist asked how Iam coping with the treatment having had 20 chemotherapy infusions. I told her that I continue to tolerate the drugs very well and am managing most of the key side-effects well and continue to search for solutions for the others. She then told me that the recent CT Scan showed that the two growths remain stable, and the Blood CEA marker has recently fallen to 2, the lowest since November 2021. Most pleasing. She then asked if I wished to have a break, which I declined an ordered a further 12 infusions.
